Don't Ignore Pain

Our goal is to work with your care team to treat your pain with as few side effects as possible while allowing you to maintain your level of functioning.

Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Most pain can be managed so you can rest but still function safely.
  • Depending on your condition, you may have some discomfort during your hospital stay.
  • Communication with your healthcare team is important. Your team will assess your pain and work with you to develop a plan to manage it.
  • A combination of treatment methods usually works best. Medications may be used to provide relief. The use of opioid medications (narcotics) will be minimized to reduce side effects and maximize function.
  • Relaxation and comfort items may help. Ask your nurse for items from the comfort menu that may help you rest.
  • Sleep is important and will help with healing.

Opioid Safety

Opioids are medications that are used to eliminate pain. Use and abuse of opioids have risen a lot in our country. If you are prescribed opioids following your hospitalization, you should keep them in a secure location, only take them as prescribed, stop taking them as soon as you can and dispose of the unused pills in a safe manner.
